Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Suḥaymī on the Impermissibility of Muslims Celebrating Valentine’s Day

Translated by Abū al-Ḥasan Mālik Ādam al-Akhḍar

Questioner:

“Indeed tomorrow corresponds with the fourteenth of February which is recognized as Valentine’s Day in the West, and some of our young men and women have been tempted by this holiday. So do you have a word of advice concerning this?”

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Suḥaymī (hafidhahullaah):

“This was the topic of last Friday’s khutbah (sermon), and perhaps someone from the students of knowledge recorded it, and I do believe that it was recorded in Masjid Amīr Ṣultān. I elaborated on this in detail. In brief, I mentioned that this Valentine’s Day contains seven objects of caution.

First: Its origin goes back to the Romans; it was originally called Cupid’s (Roman god of love) Day; so recognizing it is recognition of idolatry because it is imitation of the idolaters.

Second: It is blind following of the Jews and Christians, and the Messenger of Allāh (Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) informed us of this, ‘You will follow the ways of those who came before you…’ it was said, ‘The Jews and Christians?’ He said, ‘And what other nation [could I mean] besides those?’[2] and in another wording, ‘The Persians and the Romans.’[3]

Third: It is imitation of the disbelievers in general. The Messenger of Allāh (Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) stated, ‘Whoever imitates a people, he is from them.’[4]

Fourth: It is an innovation that has been newly introduced by the people, and whoever innovates in this affair of ours that which is not from it, it is rejected.[5]

Fifth: It is an abomination, and everything that takes place in its observance is an abomination from the meeting up of young men and women, the correspondence that takes place between them, the sending of heart-shaped Valentine’s and what is similar to this of nonsense. All of this is imitation of the West, and we have been prohibited from imitating [the disbelieving people].

Sixth: Even those who are sensible among them (i.e. the disbelievers) have prohibited celebrating this holiday, until—I believe I heard that the Vatican, the distorted Christian Church, is stern in their prohibition of this matter.

Last: It is based upon a great myth—concerning what is called love and what it leads to from corruption. So love, in their view, is merely fornication and what leads to it. Thus, it is upon us to be wary of imitating these disbelieving people. I believe this answer is adequate, and as I have previously mentioned, I have elaborated on this in the khutbah (Friday sermon). So we will suffice with this, and I commend you [to Allah’s protection] until tomorrow’s lesson. May the prayers and peace be upon the our Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam), his family and companions.”

Increase in making Dua, best of dua is the dua of ‘Arafah:

خَيرُ الدُّعَاءِ : دُعَاءُ يَومِ عَرَفَةَ

“The best du’aa is the du’aa on the Day of ‘Arafah”
[At-Tirmidhee (#3585): Declared Hasan by Shaykh al-Albaanee. See As-Saheehah (#1503)]

Abu Musa al-Ashari (radhiAllaahu ‘anhu) said:

“The Du’aa is not rejected during these days of Dhul-Hijjah.” (Lataaif p. 377)

As for the Best Dua to say on the Day of Arafah:

The Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said:

“The best du’aa is the du’aa on the Day of ‘Arafah, and the best thing that I and the Prophets before me said is: ‘Laa ilaaha illallaah, wahdahu laa shareeka lah, lahul-Mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa ‘alaa kulli shayin qadeer’.”

(There is nothing that deserves to be worshiped in truth except Allaah, He is Alone and has no partner, to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is All-Powerful over all things)
[At-Tirmidhee (#3585): Declared Hasan by Shaykh al-Albaanee. See As-Saheehah (#1503)

As for the Day of Arafaah:

The Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “There is no day on which Allaah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of ‘Arafaah. He comes close and expresses His pride to the angels, saying, ‘What do these people want?’”

As for fasting on the day of Arafaah for those not performing Hajj:

The Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) was asked about fasting on the Day of ‘Arafaah. He said, “It expiates for the sins of the previous year and of the coming year.” Narrated by Muslim.

As for the du’aa of the fasting person:

Our Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “There are three prayers that are not rejected: the prayer of a father for his child, the prayer of the fasting person and the prayer of the traveller.”

As for Du’aa in sa’at al-Istijabah on Friday:

Jâbir (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “Friday is comprised of twelve hours. There is one in which a Muslim who asks Allah for something will have it granted to him. Seek it in the last hour after `Asr.”

The Beautiful Name of Allaah Ta’ala al-Hayyee (The Shy One)

Translated & Compiled by Abbas Abu Yahya

1 – Allaah says:

<<Verily, Allaah is not ashamed to set forth a parable>>

[al-Baqarah: 26]

2 – What is mentioned in the hadeeth of Ya’ala bin Umayyah Radi Allaahu anhu:

that the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- saw a man bathing at an open place where there was no partitioning and without a wrapping garment, so the Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- climbed the Mimbar, and he praised Allaah and glorified Him and said:

‘Indeed Allaah – Azza wa Jal – is The Shy One, The One who Conceals, He loves modesty and covering up, so if one of you bathes (outside) then he should cover up.’

[Narrated by Abu Dawood andNisaa’ee – authenticated by Albaani in ‘Irwa’ no. 2335]

*IMAAM ABOO DAAWOOD AT-TAYAALISEE-rahimahullaah (d. 204 H) reported in his Musnad (no. 2545):
Imraan narrated to us: from Qataadah: from Aboo Maymooonah: from Aboo Hurairah: that Allaah’s Messenger  ( ﷺ) said, concerning Laylatul-Qadr (the Night of Decree):

” لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ لَيْلَةُ السَّابِعَةِ ، أَوِ التَّاسِعَةِ وَعِشْرِينَ ،

إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ أَكْثَرُ فِي الْأَرْضِ مِنْ عَدَدِ الْحَصَى ” .

<<Laylatul-Qadr is the twenty seventh or the twenty ninth night. The Angels that night upon the earth are more than the number of the pebbles>>.

*Shaikh al-Albaanee -rahimahullaah- said in as-Saheehah (no. 2205)

°• The Wisdoms Behind The Legislation of Fasting  °•

 Shaikh Saalih Al-Fawzaan

~

Shaikh Saalih Al-Fawzaan (hafidhahullaah) said regarding the wisdom in the legislation of fasting:

The wisdom in legislating fasting is clear, this being due to His saying The Most High:

{لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ}

((that you may attain taqwa [fearfulness and dutifulness]))

(Al-Baqarah: 183)

°• The Wisdoms Behind The Legislation of Fasting  °•

Shaikh Ahmad An-Najmee

~

With regard to some of the wisdoms in fasting, Shaikh Ahmad bin Yahyaa An-Najmee (rahimahullaah) said:

Firstly: It is a spiritual exercise of the soul due to the withholding itself from its desires and that which is beloved to it.

Secondly: That the abandonment of food and drink as well as carnal desires during this time, being done out of worship of Allaah; The Mighty and Majestic accedes to a person an increase in his Eemaan along with strength in his being wary of the forbidden affairs and abstaining from non permissible desires. °• The Wisdom Behind Fasting  °•

  Imaam Muhammad Naasir-ud-Deen Al-Albaanee

الحكمة من الصيام للعلامة الألباني

(Below is the Arabic original text)

~

”O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become people having Taqwaa.”

[Soorah al-Baqarah (2): 183]

So in this aayah, as will not be hidden to all those who are present, Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, informs the Ummah of Muhammad (saws), through this aayah, that He has made Fasting obligatory upon them just as He had made its like obligatory upon the nations before us. This is a matter that is well-known to all of the Muslims who read this aayah, and clearly understand its meaning. But what I wish to speak about is something else, a matter which very few of the general people notice – and this is the saying of Allaah, the Exalted and Most High, at the end of this Aayah:

”…So that you may become people having Taqwaa.”
