at-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah and Ibn Khuzaymah narrated in one report:

“When the first night of the month of Ramaḍān comes, the devils and rebellious Jinn are chained up and the gates of Hell are closed, and not one gate of it is opened. The gates of Paradise are opened and not one gate of it is closed. And a caller cries out:

يا باغي الخير أقبل ، ويا باغي الشر أقصر ، ولله عتقاء من النار وذلك كل ليلة

‘O seeker of good, proceed (come forth!!); O seeker of evil, desist. And Allāh has those whom He redeems from the Fire, and that happens every night.”
[صحيح الجامع ٧٥٩ ، وحسنه الألباني]

From Abu Hurairah [رضي الله عنه] who said: The Messenger of Allaah [ﷺ] used to give good news to his Companions with the arrival of Ramadan, he would say:

«قد جاءكم شهر رمضان شهرٌ مبارك ، كتب الله عليكم صيامه ،فيه تفتح أبواب الجنة وتغلق فيه أبواب الجحيم ، وتغل فيه الشياطين ، فيه ليلةٌ خيرٌ من ألف شهر ، من حُرِمَ خيرها فقد حُرِم.»

❝Indeed the month of Ramadan has arrived, a blessed month. Allaah has prescribed fasting for you. In this month the doors of Paradise are opened and the doors of hell are closed. The devils are shackled. In Ramadan there is a night better than a thousand months, whoever is prohibited from the good in that night then indeed he has been prohibited from good.❞
[Collected By al-Mundhari In Targheeb Wa Tarheeb | Authenticated By Albaani, (1/490)]

Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali said:

❝Some of the scholars said: This hadeeth is a foundation for some people congratulating others with the month of Ramadan.

How can one not give good news to the believer with the doors of Paradise opening.

How can one not give good news to the sinful that the doors of the Hell fire have been closed.
How can one not give good news to the intelligent one with that the devils are shackled.

Where can this time period be compared to any other time.❞

 [Lata’if al-Ma’arif, (1/158)]

It is reported that on the first night of Ramadân, ‘Umar – Allâh be pleased with him – would pray Maghrib, then say (to the people):

Sit down. Then he would give a small address: Verily the fasting of this month has been made a duty upon you, and standing in night prayer has not been made a duty upon you, but those amongst you who can stand in prayer should do so, for it is from the extra good deeds about which Allâh told us: so whoever cannot stand in prayer, let him sleep on his bed.
And beware of saying: I will fast if so and so fasts and I will stand in night prayer if so and so stands in prayer. Whoever fasts or stands in night prayer, he must make this for Allâh. And you should know that you are in prayer as long as you are waiting for a prayer.
Minimize any vain or false speech in the houses of Allâh (mosques; he said this two or three times). Let none of you fast a few days before the month (in order to avoid missing the beginning of the month; he said this three times). And do not fast until you see [the crescent of the new month] unless it is overcast. If it is overcast, count [the previous month] as 30 days. Then do not break your fasts until you see the night upon the mountain (i.e. you are sure the sun has set).

The Moon. One of Allaah’s سبحانه و تعالى most beautiful and magnificent creations.

Do you know the significance of the moon?

Aside from the scientific phenomenon associated with it, the moon is how Allaah سبحانه و تعالى ordained the measurement of the passage of time to be. Our entire calendar is based on the cycle of the moon. One full cycle equals one month, and twelve cycles one year.

Most of you must be familiar with the Sunnah of fasting three days every lunar month; the 13th, 14th and the 15th. Do you know what’s so special about those three days and why it was selected?

Those are Al-Ayyam al-Beed, meaning The White Days. They are called Al-Ayyam al-Beed because those are the three days in which the moon is full. And the nights are bright because of the moonlight.

There are many ahadith on the virtue of fasting three days a month, and which makes it clear that one can observe Saum on any three days of the month, and that it is not necessary to fix these days.

However, it is more meritorious to observe Saum on 13th, 14th and 15th of each lunar month because the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم has so ordained it. He himself also used to take special care of these dates and observe Saum on them, as is evident from the forthcoming ahadith.

– Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه reported: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “If you want to observe Saum on three days in a month, then fast on the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth of the (lunar) month.”

[Imaam an-Nawawi’s Riyad us-Saaliheen – Chapter 230 – Hadith 1262].

– Qatadah bin Milhan رضي الله عنه reported: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم directed us to observe Saum (fasting) on the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth of the (lunar) month.

[Imaam an-Nawawi’s Riyad us-Saaliheen – Chapter 230 – Hadith 1263].

– Ibn `Abbas رضي الله عنهما reported: It was the practice of the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم to not to omit fast on the `bright days’ whether he was staying at a place or on a journey.

[Imaam an-Nawawi’s Riyad us-Saaliheen – Chapter 230 – Hadith 1264].

Many feel that fasting is only restricted to Ramadan, but that is not so. Fasting in general and voluntary fasting in particular is a great act of worship. It can be [and should be in some cases] performed at any time and at any place except when not recommended.

It is a worship that draws the believer closer to Allaah سبحانه و تعالى and closer to perfection.

So my brothers and sisters, fast an extremely hot day, to avoid an even hotter day .. and prepare yourself for a time when no food or water will be there. For what you send forth now will be what aids you then.

Multiply your reward by reminding your family and friends insha Allaah!
